🗑️ WHAT IS A GARBAGE DISPOSAL UNIT?
A garbage disposal unit (or food waste disposer) fits under your kitchen sink and breaks down food scraps so they can be flushed away with water, rather than binned. Contrary to the popular myth, modern units like InSinkErator don’t use blades – they use impellers mounted on a spinning plate that force food waste against a grind ring, liquefying it into fine particles that flush through your wastewater pipe. Quality units are WaterMark certified, the compliance standard for plumbing products sold in New Zealand and Australia.
Wondering if a disposal unit suits your property? Because we’re also your local drainlayers, we can tell you straight away whether your specific wastewater or septic system is a good fit before you spend a cent.
🔧 GARBAGE DISPOSAL SERVICES WE OFFER
Whether you’re fitting a brand-new unit or fixing one that’s stopped working, our licensed plumbers handle every job from start to finish – supply, fit, and a proper test before we leave.

Garbage Disposal Installation
Fitting a new garbage disposal unit means connecting to your sink waste, dishwasher drain and a dedicated power supply. We install to local building code, and because power connections must be completed or signed off by a qualified electrician, we coordinate that side of the job too, so nothing gets missed.
- New sink & dishwasher connections
- Compliant with local building codes
- All major brands supplied and fitted
- Free, no-obligation quotes

Garbage Disposal Repairs
Humming but not grinding, tripped and won’t reset, or leaking underneath the sink – these are the most common faults we’re called out for. Most jams and reset issues are fixed on the spot; if it’s a motor or seal failure, we’ll tell you honestly rather than patch something that needs replacing.
- Jammed or stuck units
- Leaks & corrosion underneath
- Humming but not grinding
- No power or tripped reset

Garbage Disposal Replacement
Motor or seal failure usually means it’s time to replace rather than repair. We carry common models to callouts for same-day swap-outs where possible, and we remove and dispose of your old unit responsibly – no extra trip required.
- Motor & seal failure diagnosis
- Same-day swap-outs where possible
- Old unit removed & disposed of
- Any brand, any model

Garbage Disposal Upgrades
Renovating your kitchen or just sick of the noise? Newer units run considerably quieter with multi-stage grinding that handles tougher scraps and fewer blockages. We’ll size the right unit to your household and integrate it cleanly with a new dishwasher if you’re upgrading that too.
- Quieter, more powerful models
- Renovation & new kitchen upgrades
- Dishwasher integration
- Advice on the right size for your household

❓ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS – GARBAGE DISPOSAL UNITS
Do garbage disposal units work with septic tanks?
Many do, though it depends on your specific system – a disposal unit adds extra organic load to a septic tank, which can mean more frequent pump-outs. Because we’re also certified drainlayers, we can look at your setup and give you honest advice before you install one, rather than a generic yes.
What can’t I put down a garbage disposal?
Avoid large bones, fibrous items like celery and corn husks, cooking grease and fat, coffee grounds in large quantities, and anything that isn’t food – glass, metal, plastic or shells. Cold water while grinding helps everything flush through cleanly.
Why has my garbage disposal stopped working?
Most commonly it’s a jam or a tripped internal reset switch. Check the unit is still plugged in, then try the reset button underneath. If it hums but doesn’t spin, there’s usually an obstruction; if there’s no sound at all, it may be a power fault or a failed motor – that’s when it’s worth a proper look.
How long do garbage disposal units last?
With light regular use and proper care – cold water, avoiding fibrous scraps, the odd clean with ice or bicarb – most units give many years of reliable service. Heavy daily use in a busy household will naturally shorten that.
Can I install a garbage disposal myself?
We wouldn’t recommend it. Manufacturers themselves specify professional installation, and incorrect fitting can void your warranty. It also involves a dedicated power connection, which by law needs to be done or signed off by a qualified electrician.
Do you only install InSinkErator, or other brands too?
We install, repair, replace and upgrade all major brands available in New Zealand, including InSinkErator and Fisher & Paykel. If you’re not sure which unit suits your household, we’re happy to talk you through the options.
